5 Great Getaways Near Austin

  1. FREDERICKSBURG, TX: Fredericksburg is a charming town deeply rooted in German heritage. It is famous for its abundance of fabulous bed and breakfasts and abundance of wineries. Fredericksburg has a lovely Main Street with lots of great shops and restaurants. In addition, Fredericksburg is home to the National Museum of the Pacific War. For those who want to experience more of nature, you can visit and take a hike at the stunning Enchanted Rock State Natural Area or take a walk through the beautiful flower gardens at Wildseed Farms. Fredericksburg offers an opportunity to relax, explore, shop, dine and soak in the incredible Texas Hill Country!

  2. WACO, TX: Waco is home to Baylor University and in recent years has really stamped itself on the map thanks to Chip and Joanna Gaines and their successful HGTV hit Fixer Upper. The Gaines’ popular business Magnolia Market is a fan favorite, as is their restaurant Magnolia Table. You can even stay at their Bed and Breakfast called Magnolia House. In addition to checking out all of the offerings by the Gaines’, there are lots of other things to check out in Waco as well! Options include visiting the Cameron Park Zoo, strolling through the Dr. Pepper Museum, checking out the Waco Mammoth National Monument and stopping by the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum. Waco is also home to lots of cute shops and antique stores!

  3. SAN ANTONIO, TX: San Antonio is filled with rich history, including the famous Alamo. Perhaps the most popular tourist destination in San Antonio, the Alamo is only one of five Spanish colonial missions, all of which are designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Another hugely popular place to check out is the River Walk, offering lots of activities, restaurants and shopping. Into art and history? San Antonio also has a variety of museums to choose from including the Witte Museum and McNay Art Museum. Looking for something active and family-friendly? San Antonio is home to the San Antonio Zoo, SeaWorld and Six Flags Fiesta Texas.

  4. NEW BRAUNFELS, TX: New Braunfels is just a short drive from Austin and has a lot of great activities that keep people coming back year after year. One hugely popular activity particularly in the summer is floating down the Comal River. You stock your cooler and rent a tube and spend the day floating with family or friends. You can also visit the massive Schlitterbahn Waterpark. It has tons of attractions for kids and adults of all ages, and they allow you to bring in a picnic! You can also visit the beautiful Landa Park, Canyon Lake, or a variety of other fun places.

  5. WIMBERLEY, TX: Wimberley is an adorable town with lots of fun activities. You can shop downtown at the unique shops and dine in the delicious restaurants. You can find everything from vintage items, clothing, furniture, household items, and more! Popular outdoor activities include visiting Blue Hole Regional Park, which offers trails and a neat swimming area, and Jacob’s Well Natural Park which offers a clear spring for swimming. You can also take a popular scenic drive called Devil’s Backbone Scenic Drive or visit Lookout Mountain for some amazing views of the Texas Hill Country.
