Austin is an amazing and unique city. Located in the center of the state of Texas, Austin is also the capitol of Texas and offers tons of activities and beautiful weather and scenery. Here is a list of 10 things about Austin that you might not know. Whether you live here or not, it’s an amazing city to explore!

  1. Austin is home to the largest urban bat colony in North America. During the spring and summer, you can go to the Congress Avenue Bridge and watch as the approximately 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats emerge from under the bridge. It is something you have to see!

  2. Austin is home to the only nude beach in the state of Texas. Lake Travis is a beloved Austin lake that residents and tourists love to visit. Hippie Hollow is a beach located on Lake Travis where clothing is optional.

  3. Austin is not home to any professional sports teams. Although that may soon change, currently Austin does not house any professional sports teams. It is, however, to The University of Texas and the city loves to cheer on the Longhorns!

  4. Austin is the only city in the world that currently operates Moonlight towers. Originally built in 1894, these towers are recognized as Texas State Landmarks and are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

  5. Austin is the filming location for a bunch of movies. Movies such as What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?, Boyhood, Office Space, Spy Kids, Kill Bill Volume 1, Dazed and Confused and Congeniality were all filmed in Texas’ capitol city.

  6. Austin has amazing weather. Many think of Texas as being incredibly hot, and there are times where it is. Generally, however, Austin’s weather is lovely and enjoys an average of 300 days a year of sunshine!

  7. The Texas State Capitol Building is the second largest capitol building in the United States. It is second only to the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C. Austin offers a variety of options for touring this beautiful and historic building.

  8. Austin has an annual birthday party for Eeyore. Usually on the last Saturday in April, Austin has been celebrating Eeyore’s birthday, the beloved character from Winnie the Pooh, since 1963.

  9. Austin has a junk museum. Austin is home to a variety of museums, but one especially unique museum is called The Cathedral of Junk. There’s always something new to see each time you visit!

  10. Austin is obsessed with breakfast tacos. If you haven’t had a breakfast taco, you have been missing out! Breakfast tacos are everywhere in Austin and they are incredibly delicious. With so many different places offering delicious tacos, you’re sure to fall in love with breakfast tacos too.
